Low Fat Chocolate Chip Cookies

March 3, 2013 by Kristen Smith

What is not to love about a warm chocolate chip cookie?!

Chocolate chip cookies are a traditional American sweet treat. The creation of the cookie only dates back to the year 1930.  Ruth Graves Wakefield owned a restaurant, Toll House Inn, a popular restaurant in Massachusetts.  According to one site Ruth was mixing up a batch of cookies and realized she was out of baker’s chocolate.  In efforts to make her chocolate cookies she substituted broken piece’s of Nestle’s semi-sweet chocolate chips.  The outcome was not the chocolate cookies she desired, but rather a “chocolate chip cookie”

Chocolate chip cookies are typically made with two types of sugars (white and brown), butter, eggs, flour, and chocolate chips.  The combination of ingredients contribute to a high fat and calorie treat.  While you can have the tradition chocolate chip cookie recipe as a treat on occasion, with a few simple substitutions a lower fat and calorie treat can be created (and enjoyed more frequently).

With some simple substitutions we created a delicious cookie treat!  The cookies remain sweet (but not too sweet) and have a chewy texture.  Perfect when paired with low fat milk!

Enjoy!
