Both mama and toddler will be excited about these four different Toddler Trail Mix recipes offering a balanced snack option.
Snack time is a big deal in our household! Every day my little one enjoys a snack to and from school. Prepping a portable and non-perishable snack in advance helps the mornings run a bit smoother and allows for the snack to be enjoyed in the car. Not only is a portable snack important, but I also want to serve my toddler something nutritious to start off the day.
A few months ago I came up with this idea of prepping ahead “Toddler Trail Mix” for my toddler to snack on throughout the week. The trail mix idea allowed me to offer several foods all combined into one balanced snack option. Plus my toddler thought the combination of ingredients was pretty fun!
My toddler still loves his Toddler Trail Mix Recipe each and every morning during his car ride to school. Every Sunday night we survey the pantry together and decide what will go in this week’s trail mix. The great thing about these recipes is that you can simply use the ingredients you have on hand and allow your children to get involved in the creations. Following a few easy guidelines, you can create this balanced snack.
Tips on What Ingredients to Add to Toddler Trail Mix:
- Include 3 – 4 ingredients
- Choose cereals with at least 5 grams of fiber
- Choose cereals/animal crackers with < 3-5 grams of sugar
- Include at least one fruit or vegetable-based food (dried and dehydrated work well)
- Keep on eye on the salt containing snack foods – limit to one per trail mix recipe or choose salt-free versions (like pretzels)
- Be cautious of any foods that could present choking hazards (we avoid popcorn and nuts)
