I planned to get this post up last week, but it has just been one of those weeks! The good news is that today’s post for Heart Shaped Angel Food Cake Pops is still in time for Valentine’s Day!
For many health conscious parents – they cringe at some of the sweet treats their kiddos are offered at school parties and functions. I certainly had a mommy dietitian moment a few months ago when my toddler son was offered a sugar-sweetened cupcake at school on his birthday. On the contrary, this past week another one of my son’s classmates had a birthday, and the parents provided the kiddos with yogurt. While the teachers might have had a slight mess on their hands, I appreciate these parents for bringing a protein-packed and less sugary snack.
Should we remove all the celebratory sweet snacks from schools? Some parents think yes. I don’t necessarily agree with total avoidance. My thoughts are parents need to be mindful of the frequency and types of sweet treats the kiddos are offered, but I think with creativity kids can still be offered healthier (and fun of course) options. In fact, one of the missions of this blog is to offer ideas on how to create healthier options.
Today’s recipe for Heart Shaped Angel Food Cake Pops shows just that – a fun way to produce a healthier sweet treat. With a few simple ingredients, you can make these super cute cake pops in minutes. I actually purchased pre-made angel food cake from my local grocer to keep things simple.
If you are making these for younger children or are concerned about using a wooden stick you could also make them with paper cake pop sticks or just skip the stick all together. Once the chocolate dries they are an easy finger food.
As always the kiddos can be an active part in creating these treats. Allow them to help cut out the cake shapes with cookie cutters or decorate the tops with sprinkles (after the chocolate has been drizzled). I am sure they can came come up with creative decorating techniques!
