Keep calories in check while staying hydrated with this delicious Strawberry Lemon Basil Water recipe
Happy “Water Wednesday”!
The heat is well upon us as we start off the hottest month of the summer! Throughout the month of August I want to remind everyone of the importance of drinking adequate water. A common misconception about water is that it lacks flavor and taste. The great new is that you can add flavors through natural sweeteners without offering excessive calories! Enjoy my flavored water recipes throughout the month of August.
How much water should you drink everyday?
While the question appears straight forward unfortunately the answer is not. Over the years studies have produced varying recommendations, but in reality water needs should be individualized based on factors including health, location, and physical activity level. Currently the most reliable recommendations are from the Institute of Medicine – they determined an adequate intake of fluids (from all beverages) are approximately 13 cups for men and 9 cups for women. These recommendations are not so far off from the commonly known recommendation of 8 glasses of water per day right?!
What are the health benefits of water?
Water is the largest chemical component of your body and makes up approximately 60 percent of your body weight. Each and every system in your body is reliant on water. For example water functions as a protective barrier in the skin to prevent excess fluid loss or transports waste products in and out of cells in kidneys. Fluid losses occur continuously throughout the body from breathing, urine, stool output, or skin evaporation and must be replaced. Inadequate intake of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that can happen with sub-optimal intake. Dehydration can make you feel tired and drain your energy level.
Drink (water) up!!
Enjoy!
